Proper is what happens when a hotel group hands its interiors to a designer with a strong point of view and then declines to talk her down. Downtown LA Proper occupies a 1920s Renaissance Revival building filled with tile, pattern and hand thrown ceramics; Santa Monica Proper is bleached and coastal; Austin Proper is all leather and Texas modernism. The group also runs By Proper, a set of adopted properties including the Shelborne in Miami and Montauk Yacht Club, and The Collective.
The hotels are good and the programme is real. What is not public is what it gives you.
