Kit Kemp designs every Firmdale interior, and the result is the opposite of the beige international luxury standard: headboards in hand blocked linen, a mannequin in the stairwell, forty different fabrics in one drawing room, and somehow none of it tips over. Tim and Kit Kemp built the group property by property from 1985 onward and still own it, which is why the hotels feel like a house rather than an asset class.
They are also genuinely good hotels underneath the pattern. The Soho and the Ham Yard have proper screening rooms, the beds are excellent, and the drawing rooms are the rare hotel space guests actually sit in.
