Windstar made its name with a trio of sailing yachts whose white sails unfurl at the touch of a button, usually to music as the ship leaves port. They have since been joined by a group of all-suite motor yachts, but the scale and the spirit are the same: small, casual and close to the water.
A watersports platform lowers from the stern at anchor, and the bridge is generally open to guests who want to talk to the officers on watch. Evenings are relaxed, with no formal dress, and most voyages include a barbecue on deck or a private event ashore. In French Polynesia, where Windstar has sailed for many years, a ship is based in Tahiti all year.
