Variety Cruises has been run by the same Athenian family for three generations, and its style is rooted in Greek hospitality. The fleet consists of motor yachts and motor sailers that carry a few dozen guests each, small enough to tie up at the quay of a fishing village or anchor in a cove with no one else in sight.
Swimming directly from the stern is part of most days. Dinner is often left free so that guests can eat ashore in a taverna, while lunch on board leans on Greek and Mediterranean cooking. The mood is informal and sociable, helped by open seating and a single shared deck. Away from the Aegean, the same formula is applied to warm-water archipelagos and coasts with little other cruise traffic.
