The Moorings began in 1969 with a handful of yachts in the British Virgin Islands and has grown into one of the best-known names in yacht charter. This is not a cruise line in the usual sense. Each party has a vessel to itself, a sailing catamaran, a monohull or a power catamaran, and sets its own course.
Experienced sailors can take the helm themselves. Others add a skipper, or choose a fully crewed yacht on which a captain and chef look after navigation, provisioning and meals. The days are simple in outline: a short passage in the morning, a mooring in a sheltered bay, snorkelling from the stern, dinner on board or at a beach bar ashore. Tortola remains the home base, alongside Mediterranean bases in Greece and Croatia.
