Virtuoso
The Swan Hellenic name goes back to the 1950s, when the original British company took passengers around the classical sites of Greece in the company of scholars. The modern line has revived that tradition on a new generation of small, ice-strengthened ships with clean, Scandinavian-influenced interiors.
Lecturers remain central. Historians, naturalists and other specialists travel with each voyage and give context to what lies ashore, whether an Antarctic research station or a trading port on the West African coast. Itineraries deliberately seek out places with few visitors. The ships have comfortable cabins, many with balconies, an observation lounge and a heated outdoor pool, and the atmosphere is that of a well-read house party.
