Star Clippers was founded by a Swedish yachtsman who wanted to bring back the great clipper ships, and its vessels are true sailing ships, not motor vessels with decorative masts. Royal Clipper, the flagship, is a five-masted full-rigged ship inspired by the German windjammer Preussen. Her two smaller fleetmates are four-masted barquentines.
On board, the sea is close. Guests may help haul on the lines, climb to a platform on the mast under supervision, or lie in the netting at the bowsprit while the hull cuts along below. The style is relaxed, with open-seating dinners, no formal dress and a tropical bar on deck. Anchorages tend to be small harbours and beaches, reached by tender, with watersports run from the ship.
