Silversea was founded in the 1990s by an Italian shipping family, and a certain Italian polish remains: good coffee, well-cut uniforms, a preference for understatement over spectacle. Every suite is attended by a butler, who will unpack, arrange dinner reservations and bring breakfast course by course.
The ocean ships are small to mid-sized, with several restaurants and a pool deck that rarely feels crowded. The expedition fleet takes the same service to the ends of the earth, including the Galapagos, where a purpose-built ship sails the islands all year with local naturalists. In the polar regions, voyages are led by expedition teams and conducted by Zodiac. Silversea is now part of the Royal Caribbean Group, though it continues to operate very much on its own terms.
