Sea Cloud was built in 1931 for the American heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, and her original cabins survive, complete with marble fireplaces and gilded fittings. The four-masted barque has since been joined by two modern tall ships built in the same spirit, with more space and contemporary comforts.
What sets a voyage apart is the sailing itself. When the wind allows, the engines are stopped and the crew goes aloft to loose the canvas by hand, a manoeuvre that brings most guests on deck to watch. Life on board is quiet and largely outdoors: reading on the teak, a swim from the platform at anchor, dinner under the rigging. The company is German-owned, and the passenger list is international.
