Royal Caribbean builds on a scale few others attempt. Its biggest ships are among the largest passenger vessels afloat, divided into neighbourhoods that include an open-air park planted with real trees and a boardwalk with a carousel. Around them are surf simulators, climbing walls, ice rinks, water slides and theatres staging full-length productions.
The appeal is breadth. A family of three generations can scatter after breakfast and each find something to do, then meet again for dinner in one of a long list of restaurants. Suites at the top of the range come with a dedicated lounge and sun deck. Many Caribbean sailings call at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the line's private island in the Bahamas, which has its own water park and quieter beaches.
