Virtuoso
Riviera Travel began as a British escorted tour company in the 1980s and brings the same well-organised, good-value approach to the rivers. Its ships, several of them named for writers such as Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen, are modern and comfortable without being showy, with panoramic lounges, a sun deck and cabins that often have French balconies.
Guided excursions are built into each itinerary, led by local guides and coordinated by a cruise director. The atmosphere is sociable and unpretentious, and the passenger list is largely British. Riviera is also known for looking after solo travellers, with departures set aside for those travelling alone.
