A generation of travellers first met Princess through The Love Boat, the television series filmed aboard its ships, and the line has kept something of that easy, sociable character. Its ships are large but conventional in the good sense: a central piazza with a café and live music, films shown under the stars by the pool, traditional dining rooms alongside speciality restaurants.

Alaska is the heartland. Princess has sailed there for decades and backs its voyages with its own wilderness lodges and glass-domed rail carriages, so that a week among the glaciers can be joined to several days inland near Denali. Elsewhere the fleet ranges widely, from the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to Japan and Australia, appealing chiefly to couples and to families travelling across generations.
