The name that has meant sleeper carriages, marquetry and brass since 1883 has now gone to sea. Orient Express Sailing Yachts is a new venture, and its first vessel, Orient Express Corinthian, is the first to carry the name to sea, with a sister yacht planned to follow.
Corinthian is a very large sailing yacht by any measure, built in France and driven in part by tall rigid sails set on tilting masts, so that a passage under wind power is part of the design and not a gesture. Inside, every guest is accommodated in a suite, and the decoration draws on the golden age of travel that the trains evoke: lacquer, leather, polished wood. With restaurants, bars, a spa and a pool, life on board is closer to a grand hotel than to a conventional cruise ship.
