Virtuoso
HX is the expedition arm that grew out of Hurtigruten, the Norwegian coastal line, and now operates as a company in its own right. It inherits well over a century of experience in cold water, and it takes its history seriously: several of its ships are named after Norwegian polar explorers.
The fleet is larger in scale than many expedition operators', which brings a steadier ride and more space on board, including a science centre where guests can work alongside the expedition team with microscopes and samples. Two of the ships were built with hybrid battery systems to cut fuel use. Antarctica, Greenland and Svalbard form the heart of the programme, with Alaska and the Northwest Passage in season and a small ship based in the Galapagos. The tone is informal and curious.
