Since 1893 a ship has left for the north of Norway almost every day. Hurtigruten began as a mail and cargo service linking the isolated communities of the coast, and it still performs that role. Its vessels carry freight, cars and local passengers alongside travellers making the full voyage, and they call at 34 ports between Bergen and Kirkenes, from cities such as Trondheim and Tromsø to fishing villages where the stop lasts a quarter of an hour.
This is not a conventional cruise. There is little entertainment and no need for it, because the coastline is the point: the Lofoten wall, the crossing of the Arctic Circle, the North Cape. In summer the sun does not set. In winter the same route is one of the more reliable places to see the northern lights. The food draws on suppliers along the coast.
