Holland America Line began in Rotterdam in the 1870s, carrying emigrants across the Atlantic, and it has kept something of the liner tradition ever since. Its ships are mid-sized, with wraparound promenade decks, dark blue hulls and a notable collection of art and antiques. The pace on board is measured. Live music is a particular strength, with several venues on each ship, and cooking and regional enrichment programmes fill the sea days.
Alaska is where the line is most at home. It has sailed there for many decades and operates its own lodges and land tours into Denali and the Yukon, so a cruise can be joined to several days inland. Elsewhere it favours longer itineraries, including extended voyages that circle a continent or the globe. The line is part of Carnival Corporation.
