A barge on a French canal moves at walking pace. That is the appeal of Belmond's Les Bateaux, a small collection of converted and purpose-built barges that drift through Burgundy, Champagne and other regions of France, tying up beside vineyards and villages along the way.
Each barge carries only a handful of guests in a few cabins, with its own captain, crew and private chef, and many are booked whole by a family or a group of friends. Days are loosely arranged around the table and the towpath: a market visit, a tasting at a wine estate, a bicycle ride to the next lock while the boat catches up. Belmond, part of the LVMH group, is better known for its hotels and trains, and the barges share their polished, slightly old-fashioned style.
