Avalon's best-known idea is a simple one. In most of its cabins the bed faces the window rather than the wall, and the window itself slides open almost the full width of the room, turning the whole suite into a kind of open-air balcony. On a river, where the scenery is a few metres away, the difference is felt every morning.
The line belongs to the Globus family of brands, a Swiss-owned touring group with roots going back to the 1920s, and that background shows in well-organised excursions and a choice of sightseeing styles, from classic guided walks to more active outings by bicycle or on foot. The ships sail the main European rivers and the Mekong. On board the style is relaxed, with flexible dining and no formal dress code.
