Atlas Ocean Voyages calls its ships expedition yachts, and the phrase is a fair description. They are small, ice-strengthened vessels built for the polar regions, yet fitted out with the comforts of a luxury ship: a spa, several places to eat, and a relaxed, all-inclusive approach to drinks and dining.
The year is divided by season. In the southern summer the fleet sails to Antarctica from Ushuaia. In the northern summer it heads for Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland. Between the two, the yachts turn to warmer water, with itineraries in the Mediterranean and elsewhere that put the emphasis on food, wine and smaller harbours rather than wildlife. An expedition team leads the polar landings, and the atmosphere on board stays informal throughout.
