Virtuoso
On a stretch of the Peruvian Amazon far from any road, Aqua Expeditions introduced a kind of river vessel that looked more like a contemporary hotel than a boat: dark timber, low furniture, and suites with a wall of glass facing the forest. The company has since taken the same formula to the Mekong, the Galapagos and the islands of eastern Indonesia, with a different vessel in each.
All of them are small, carrying a few dozen guests at most, with a high number of crew. Days are spent off the ship in skiffs or tenders with local naturalist guides, looking for river dolphins, monkeys and birdlife in the Amazon, or snorkelling and diving in Indonesia. The cooking draws on each region and is overseen by well-regarded consulting chefs.
