Founded by river cruise veterans and still run in a family spirit, AmaWaterways has made a reputation on two things: food and activity. Dinner is taken seriously, with regional menus and wines poured from the valleys the ship is passing through. By day there are bicycles on board, guided hikes, and shore excursions offered at different paces, so a morning in a Danube town can be gentle or energetic.
The ships are long, low European river vessels with a high proportion of balcony cabins, and one of them, AmaMagna on the Danube, is built roughly twice the usual width. Beyond Europe, the line sails the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia, the Nile in Egypt, and the Chobe River in southern Africa, where a river safari is paired with time on land.
